Renault Vel Satis

Kinja'd!!!

Made (in rhd) until 2005. Never very common but I used to see them fairly often. Now, not a one. Big cars tend to disappear fairly rapidly because nobody wants them second hand.

Haha me and schaefft have looked at ones for sale for a while. One was listed as a “special addition” meaning special edition I assume. I messaged them to see what special editon they thought it was, since the car only had three trim levels. They replied saying it was just to grab attention and it’s a standard car. Because gumtree.

Interestingly, one critic had the opinion that the Vel Satis wasn’t ugly enough to be popular.

I’m not 100% sure on this but I think the only Vel Satis I’ve ever seen was the one the French embassy owned here. These weren’t sold in Finland when new.

They were pretty unreliable too. A friend of mine traded his in with half the options deactivated by the dealer because fixing them would have been too expensive

I’m a big fan of the Vel Satis. It’s kinda like a modern take on the DS. Sadly, it was just too weird for the kind of people who buy big cars in Europe to actually buy it.

Clarkson, May, and Hammond all like it, if I recall correctly.

Weren’t they made with the same care and attention to detail as the 2nd gen ph1 Laguna?

They might not be wrong. I mean in isolation it looks very unusual, but park it next to a big butt megane and an avantime... It would look almost dull.

This has always been on my short list for if I ever wound up in England long enough to need a car. Not that I see that happening ever. But if it did, this or a Citroen C6.

I believe that was the Avantime. Somewhat similar idea, much better execution.

You’d have better luck in France in either case as most were sold there.

They talked about it at some point - one of those you-dress-like-shit women was on the show, and she thanked Clarkson for recommending the Vel Satis.

I remember them agreeing on the Mondeo, the Avantime, and the Subaru Outback and little else. You may be right ...
